Gareth Southgate will drill England on set-piece routines ahead of the knockout stages as he tries to solve their lack of goals.

Scoring from set plays has been a feature of Southgate’s reign. Indeed, nine of England’s 12 goals at World Cup 2018 came from dead-ball situations.

But they failed to score from a set piece in their opening three Euros games, an issue Southgate wants to resolve ahead of Tuesday’s last-16 tie against Germany.

England have scored just two goals all tournament and Southgate knows set plays could be vital moving forward.

As a result, the England manager will consider handing Kieran Trippier, who is a dead-ball expert, a return to the starting XI.

Mason Mount and Phil Foden were due to be on set-piece duty for the game against the Czech Republic.

But the enforced absence of Mount and Ben Chilwell due to Covid issues created problems for Southgate.

‘Our delivery hasn’t been good, really,’ said Southgate.

‘There was the one where John Stones hit the post (against Scotland) which was bang on the money and Trippier’s delivery in the first game was excellent, but we haven’t matched that since.

‘It’s quite rare for us. We have gone four or five matches without a set-piece goal and that’s an area where we can improve upon.’

Meanwhile, Foden and Jack Grealish are set to battle it out for England’s No 10 role in next week’s clash.

Bukayo Saka produced a man-of-the-match display on his tournament debut against the Czechs and has staked a strong claim to keep his place on the right wing.

And with Mount set to miss the start of the knockout stages, Grealish and Foden are the two options for the role as England’s chief creator.
