England manager Gareth Southgate is ready to agree a deal with the FA to extend his stay as national team head coach.

Southgate’s current deal expires after the World Cup but there is a will from both parties to extend that to until Euro 2024.

Sources claim there is an agreement in principle with the situation expected to move quickly once England have secured World Cup qualification. The FA have refused to comment.

Southgate currently earns £3million a year, but he can expect sharp pay rise taking him beyond the £5m mark if bonuses are reached.

That salary would see the Englishman close in on Fabio Capello’s eye-watering wage during his five-year stint in charge of the Three Lions. The Italian earned £6million a year.

Southgate has impressed in the Three Lions hot seat since taking charge in 2016, guiding England to the final of Euro 2020 this summer, as well as the World Cup semi finals in Russia three years ago.

Southgate is understood to have his focus firmly set on the immediate task at hand – to secure qualification for next year’s World Cup – before the new extension is announced.

They can achieve that feat if they win their next two qualifiers, starting tonight against Albania at Wembley. The Three Lions then take on minnows San Marino on Monday.

Southgate has overseen a remarkable turnaround in England’s fortunes since he took over on a permanent basis in 2016.

Fresh from a humiliating defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016, Southgate’s England have gone from strength to strength and are No 5 in FIFA’s World Rankings.

Meanwhile, a new contract for Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland is expected, with the former Chelsea coach a key member of the manager’s backroom setup and responsible for integral tactical ploys in recent years.

Should he see out his new contract, Southgate will have spent 13 years with the Football Association – including his previous stints as head of elite development and Under-21 manager.

Eight years as Three Lions boss will match Sir Bobby Robson’s effort from 1982 to 1990, while tonight he draws level with Sven Goran Eriksson for England games managed (67).

Only Robson, Sir Alf Ramsey and Walter Winterbottom have managed more international matches for England while only Capello boasts a better win percentage.

Southgate will be tasked with bringing the best out of an exciting and burgeoning class of talented youngsters coming through, with it hoped that the likes of Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Bukayo Saka can lead England to their second major trophy by Euro 2024.
