The Three Lions boss was subsequently treated at a nearby hospital with the assistance of team doctor Rob Chakraverty.

‘You can run along the main road here that runs alongside the beach and I clipped a step, landed on my elbow and popped the shoulder out,’ Southgate told BBC 5 live’s World Cup Daily podcast.

‘I of course got up as quickly as I could, as you do, you think ‘I hope nobody’s seen me fall’. I was looking at the scrapes and then realised my arm was bending in a direction it doesn’t normally.

‘I was lucky I had my phone with me for my music so I was able to phone the doctor and just pulled my cap down and hoped nobody spotted me before he came.’

Southgate made light of the situation while many fans were curious how fast he could run 10km in.

He said: ‘It’s certainly over 40 minutes and it depends on how quickly I’m being chased.

‘My physical fitness is important to me because, I think, mentally you’re sharp if you can maintain that. It’s definitely a place as a manager where you get some time to think, some time on your own and just some time to switch off and get some fresh air.

‘I’ve got to find a replacement for that because I don’t think I’ll be on the rowing machine too quickly either over the next couple of months. ‘
