An AFL legend has revealed the unbelievable moment he was shot at by ‘territorial hillbillies’ during a pre-season training camp in Victoria.

Garry Lyon, a former captain of the Melbourne ‘Demons’ Football Club, said that during a training session in Ballarat, several members of the team were shot at by angry locals.

Lyon, 51, said that under the guidance of legendary football coach, John Northey, the team were running through the bush before two men started firing and chasing the players into the showers.

‘We had a pre-season training camp in Ballarat, where (Northey) was from,’ Lyon told The Front Bar on Thursday night.

‘We’d done a hard Friday night, we’d done all day Saturday and then Sunday was a run through the bush in Creswick.’

Lyon, who played for Melbourne from 1986 to 1999, said that the team was split into eight groups during the bush run and he was in the last group to start.

‘(Northey) said ‘Look, the locals are a bit territorial, running through the hills and that, so just be careful’. I was only a young fella so I just said ‘fair enough”.

‘We are halfway up the hill and out pokes these two hillbillies with shotguns. They said, ‘Get off our hill ya b*****ds!’ and shot over the top of our heads,’ Lyon said.

Lyon said one of his team mates ‘went flying’ as the rest of them sprinted down the hill, before the gunmen threatened them again in the showers during the incident in the late 80s or early 90s.

‘So we went and had a shower and this bloke comes charging in the shower,’ he said.

Lyon then poked fun at the Adelaide Crows, who came under fire after an emotionally exhausting pre-season training camp during 2018 left players mentally traumatised.

‘And you reckon the Adelaide Crows had a problem with their pre-season.’
