Gary Lineker appeared to aim a balding dig at Frank Lampard during the BBC’s live coverage of Euro 2024 in Germany – to the apparent anger of the Chelsea great.

Lampard, 45, was part of the broadcasting giant’s punditry panel alongside Alex Scott and Thomas Frank for Germany’s 2-0 victory against Hungary on Wednesday.

The BBC’s sleek studio is based directly in front of the famous Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and situated near a fan park which screens games during the tournament.

Speaking after the match, Lineker told viewers that footage of Germany supporters wildly celebrating a goal was recorded from the nearby event space.

A large screen, however, separated the studio from the park.

‘I wish they’d take that screen down, then we’d see all the punters,’ Lineker said. ‘But if they took the screen down, they wouldn’t be able to watch the game.’

Lampard then responded: ‘The back of our heads… who wouldn’t turn up for that?’

In a brutal and unprovoked riposte, Lineker took a swipe at Lampard’s hairstyle.

‘No one wants to see the back of your head these days, do they Frank?’ the host said, sparking disbelief on X, formerly Twitter. ‘That’s for sure.’

The smile on Lampard’s face visibly dropped in a split second as Lineker swiftly changed the subject, leading some to suggest the comment had irked him.

‘That’s savage,’ one X user posted alongside two crying laughing emojis.

‘Fuming!!!!’ added another.

A third, meanwhile, said: ‘That’s a booking, Gary.’

Lampard, whose last post saw him endure a poor interim spell at Chelsea, remains out of work this summer but is reportedly a shock contender to take over at Burnley.

Former Clarets manager Vincent Kompany was unveiled as Bayern Munich’s shock new head coach last month, leaving his position at Turf Moor vacant.

England legend Lampard’s last permanent coaching role lasted just under a year during a stint at Everton, where he recorded just 12 wins from 44 games in charge.
