Gary Neville has described England’s Euro 2024 final defeat as a ‘never ending story where we can’t get over the line’.

The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain in Berlin on Sunday night despite a late comeback goal from Cole Palmer.

Asked what he made of the final, Neville said: ‘That was the most impressive thing about Spain. You felt momentum was with England. To score a winner was fantastic.

‘It is incredibly tough and painful for England fans, it is a never ending story where we can’t get over the line. Maybe we didn’t deserve to.

‘They had a lot of chances. To not control the biggest game has been a problem for England in many tournaments, to have to play behind the ball. You can win the odd game, but eventually you will play against a team with too much quality.

‘When they have that possession, it is draining. Where are your options? The English players are shattered.

‘Spain lost their best player at half time and performed like that without him. Our players are devastated. They have been here again, I have no words for them. The fans are devastated. It feels like one time too many. How long can this go on?’

Adding to Neville’s comments, Roy Keane said: ‘A lot of England’s young players have been fantastic. They lack quality and have throughout the tournament.

‘When you watch it, top level sport is brutal, sometimes the opposition is just better. They deserved it to win seven times in a row. In sport you have to step back and be humble.

‘The best team won tonight their record has been fantastic. They have a great mix, youth, experience, they beat Germany, France, England. They worked their socks off, have fight, desire, pride. But without a doubt they deserve it.’
