Gary Neville has lavished praise on the ‘brilliant’ Harvey Elliott following the Liverpool youngster’s impressive display against Chelsea, as Jamie Redknapp said the midfielder played ‘with maturity that belies his tender years’.
Eyebrows were raised on Saturday afternoon when Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp included 18-year-old in his starting line up for the Reds’ crunch clash with Chelsea at Anfield with both sides setting their stall in the title race.
Yet Elliott impressed in a midfield three alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, with the Englishman taking the game to Chelsea counterparts Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.

And Manchester United legend Neville was eager to underline Elliott’s contribution to Klopp’s side after the two giants played out a 1-1 draw, singling out the youngster’s ‘urgency’ in midfield.
‘He was brilliant,’ Neville said of Elliott on Sky Sports. ‘He was confident, first few touches was outstanding and brought a bit of urgency to Liverpool through midfield.
‘When he got on the ball I thought he brought a bit of impetus and a little bit something might happen. He looked to try and do something and take risks.

However, the Englishman justified his inclusion with an assured performance in Merseyside
‘A really good game, [his] second Premier League start and the first time I’ve seen him live. [It was a] fantastic performance.’
Klopp was rather subdued in his analysis of Elliott’s game, but was pleased with the partnership between the 18-year-old, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right.
Former Liverpool star Redknapp was particularly impressed with Elliott’s ‘maturity’ and predicted that the starlet is destined to represent England if he maintains his performances under Klopp.
‘He plays with a maturity that belies his tender years,’ Redknapp added on Sky Sports. ‘He is so comfortable on the ball he looks like he’s been playing here for years.
‘One or two occasions I’d love for him to be a bit more responsible and make something happen.

Ex-Reds star Jamie Redknapp (L) echoed Neville (R), saying he is destined for England
‘I think if he carries on in the way he is, he can go right to the top and play for his country no two ways about it. I find it interesting Klopp plays it down and never gets too excited.’
Liverpool signed Elliott from Fulham in 2019, shortly after he became the youngest ever player in Premier League history following his appearance against Wolves at Molineux for the Cottagers.
Elliott was loaned out to Championship side Blackburn Rovers last season but appears certain to play a big role for Klopp’s team this season as they bid to re-capture the league title.
