Gary Neville has a pint launched at his head outside the Amex as Manchester City fans hurl abuse at United legend before watching their side win the title

  • Gary Neville was at the Amex on Sunday to cover Manchester City’s final game
  • The Sky Sports pundit had to walk through a crowd of City fans on his way in
  • Supporters launched pints of beer at the former Manchester United defender

Gary Neville was abused by Manchester City fans on his way into the Amex Stadium on Sunday, with both insults and pints hurled at the former Manchester United defender.

The 44-year-old was at Brighton’s ground to cover the final day of the season for Sky Sports, as City went in search of the victory that would seal back-to-back Premier League titles.

On arriving at the ground, Neville had to make his way through a group of City fans, who had arrived early to soak up the atmosphere.

Fans attempted to diffuse the situation

A couple of fans attempted to diffuse the situation, which had clearly upset the 44-year-old

Recognising the former captain of their neighbours, City fans began to surround Neville, with two pints launched at him.

He had to duck the second one as supporters repeatedly told him to ‘f*** off’.

The incident was caught on the phone of one City fan – who captioned the video ‘red c***’ along with two laughing emojis.

After the second drink is launched – and barely misses the former England international’s head – two City supporters stepped in a bid to stop the abuse, gesturing to the others to stop.

Neville eventually made his way up the stairs, turning around at the top to address the fans

They appeared to apologise to him on behalf of the others, but Neville was purely intent on leaving the area as quickly as possible, managing finally to get up the stairs.

Getting to the top, he turned round to sarcastically give the group the thumbs up.

Inside the ground, City survived an early scare to win 4-1 and secure their fourth Premier League title.

And putting the abuse received beforehand to the back of his mind, Neville had nothing but praise for Pep Guardiola and his side after an astonishing season.

‘Winning back-to-back titles is about mentality,’ he said. ‘He’s instilled a mentality that is powerful, strong and makes them feel like they’re unbeatable.

‘What a coach. How do they keep him for another five years, ten years? How do they keep him in Manchester? While he’s there, it will be very difficult for other clubs to get near them. He’s that good.

‘He’s a special special manager. Probably one of the greatest ever. He’s made those players double champions. It’s a mentality. The idea that you wake up the day after you’ve won it and you go again exactly the same as before. They’ve got that belief that one title isn’t enough.’
