Gavin and Stacey will return ‘one day’ according to BBC bosses, who confirmed that the much-loved show will be revived again in the future on Tuesday.

While outlining the upcoming Christmas television schedule, the channel’s Chief Content Officer, Charlotte Moore, discussed the future of the BBC1 sitcom.

She explained: ‘That wasn’t something that was going to happen this year,’ and followed that up with: ‘One day.’

Hope for the future! Gavin and Stacey will return ‘one day’ according to BBC bosses, who confirmed that the much-loved show will be revived again in the future on Tuesday

Last week main characters, Joanna Page and Mathew Horne were spotted celebrating the end of the Welsh lockdown on a night out together in Cardiff.

And fans are beside themselves at the prospect of another Gavin and Stacey reunion – hopeful that the actors were meeting to discuss it.

Joanna, 43, and Matthew, 42, play the titular duo in the iconic sitcom, which returned last Christmas for a one-off episode, a decade after supposedly ending for good.

Fan Kirstie Smith spotted them while out with her boyfriend, and managed to get a snap of the pair.

Unable to pose with them due to COVID-19 rules and social distancing, the actors happily smiled at her through a perspex screen for the photo.

She later told Wales Online: ‘I was so chuffed to see them but obviously gutted due to what’s going on I couldn’t actually go up to them properly but at least I managed to get a quick picture.’

Someone else who saw the duo on the same night tweeted: ‘Don’t want anyone to lose their s**t but I’ve just seen Gavin and Stacey in Cardiff walking past me. Filming?’

It’s highly unlikely that the meeting was anything Gavin and Stacey related.

The sitcom’s co-creator Ruth Jones revealed that there are ‘no plans’ for the series to return anytime soon, largely thanks to the current pandemic.

The actress, 53, admitted she and co-scribe James Corden have to be ‘in the same room’ to write their episodes, which has been impossible during 2020.

The long-awaited 2019 Christmas Special ended on a heart-stopping cliffhanger, with Nessa [Jones] proposing for Smithy [Corden] after confessing her love for him.

Ruth said: 'I wish I could say yes but as has always been the case, James and I love to write together in the same room and that's just not possible at the moment because he's in America and I'm in the UK. There aren't any plans at the moment, but who knows?'

Ruth told Lorraine Kelly: ‘It’s lovely that people ask me. People always say ”I’m really sorry to ask…’

Ruth did briefly reprise her role as Nessa during lockdown for a hilarious clip which saw the no-nonsense Welsh woman reminding everyone to adhere to social distancing.

She added: ‘The reason I love her is because she doesn’t care what other people think at all. I think that’s a good life philosophy to have.’

Fans were left speechless on Christmas Day when the long-awaited special ended on a shocking cliffhanger, a decade after the beloved show had last aired on screen.

The series was penned by Ruth and James, who also starred as on-off lovers Nessa and Smithy alongside Mathew Horne as Gavin and Joanna Page as Stacey.
