Gavin and Stacey’s Ruth Jones admits show may NEVER return

The BBC recently teased viewers and claimed hit sitcom Gavin and Stacey would be back ‘one day’, following last year’s successful Christmas special.

However creator Ruth Jones dashed hopes during an appearance on This Morning on Friday, as she admitted the show ‘may never return to Barry’.

The Welsh actress and writer, 53, admitted she has no plans to start writing a new script for the programme, especially as her co-writer James Cordon lives in the U.S.

Following the 2019 festive special, fans of the show have been crying out for another one-off episode, based on the lives of Gavin [Mathew Horne] and Stacey [Joanna Page], and their best mates Nessa and Smithy, played by Ruth and James.

The final scene in the episode ended on a huge cliffhanger as Nessa got down on one knee and proposed to unlikely love interest Smithy, who she shares son Neil with following a night of passion in series one.

Speaking to hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford about likelihood of giving fans an answer to the question, Ruth said: ‘There aren’t any plans to write anything.

‘Obviously James [Corden] is in America and I’m in Wales. The joy of our last special is that if we never go back to Barry, we’ll always wonder what happened next.’

She added: ‘I quite like leaving it hanging. I’m sorry I don’t have any better news.’

Fans were left devastated by the most recent update on the show, and took to Twitter to express their disappointment online.

One person wrote: ‘Whoever said that they was doing a new load of Gavin & Stacey’s, I hope you stub your toe! Ruth Jones said it’s getting left as it is Weary faceWeary face.’

It comes in contrast to what was reported earlier this week, when BBC bosses confirmed that the much-loved show will be revived again in the future.

While outlining the upcoming Christmas television schedule, the channel’s Chief Content Officer, Charlotte Moore, discussed the future of the BBC1 sitcom.

She explained: ‘That wasn’t something that was going to happen this year,’ and followed that up with: ‘One day.’

Earlier this month main characters, Joanna and Mathew were spotted celebrating the end of the Welsh lockdown on a night out together in Cardiff.

And fans are beside themselves at the prospect of another Gavin and Stacey reunion – hopeful that the actors were meeting to discuss it.

Joanna, 43, and Matthew, 42, play the titular duo in the iconic sitcom, which returned last Christmas for a one-off episode, a decade after supposedly ending for good.

Fan Kirstie Smith spotted them while out with her boyfriend, and managed to get a snap of the pair.

Unable to pose with them due to COVID-19 rules and social distancing, the actors happily smiled at her through a perspex screen for the photo.

She later told Wales Online: ‘I was so chuffed to see them but obviously gutted due to what’s going on I couldn’t actually go up to them properly but at least I managed to get a quick picture.’

Someone else who saw the duo on the same night tweeted: ‘Don’t want anyone to lose their s**t but I’ve just seen Gavin and Stacey in Cardiff walking past me. Filming?’
