Gavin & Stacey fans are left delighted with first full Christmas special trailer

The trailer for the hotly-anticipated Gavin & Stacey Christmas special was released on Saturday.

Set on the festive day, the trailer begins with Gavin opening his front door for best pal Smithy (James Corden), and they immediately jump into song with Elton John’s Step Into Christmas.

They dancing duo are then joined by Gavin’s mum Pam and his dad Mick, as the former says: ‘They’re all hyped up about tomorrow they are.’

Smithy’s iconic blue Volvo is then seen parked up outsides Stacey’s mum Gwen’s home in Barry, where everyone joyfully greets one another ahead of the big day.

Before Rob Brydon’s Uncle Bryn makes a welcome return, as he asks Stacey ‘how do you think I feel?’ as he’s in charge of making Christmas dinner.

Pete and Dawn Sutcliffe are back to their usual feuding ways, as the latter warns her husband that she ‘cannot fall from our trust tree again.’

While Pam attempts to diffuse the situation by getting Mick to ‘open that bottle of wine’ for the group.

Heading to pub for a pint the whole gang look cheerful, but things descend into chaos a moment later as another scene shows Uncle Bryn distraught as a smashed plate of food is splattered on the floor while he makes Christmas dinner. 

Stacey (Joanna Page) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) arrive to try and assist, and he tells them: ‘Would you kindly inform everyone that dinner will be late.’

There’s laughs all around the Christmas dinner table, as Pam shouts ‘what a palaver’ while Mick, Gwen, Gavin, Stacey, and Smithy are left in stitches by the mishap.

Ending on a cheery Christmas note,  the gang are seen partying the night away in a pub, before Stacey jumps into Gavin’s arms for a sweet embrace. 

The final series ended with the happy couple announcing they were expecting their first child.

Fans of the hit comedy series set in Wales and Essex are eagerly anticipating the special after the last episode aired ten years ago.

Taking to Twitter to show their excitement for the show returning, one fan wrote: ‘More excited for Gavin and Stacey this Christmas than actual Christmas, can anyone relate.’

Another added: ‘CANNOT.BLOODY.WAIT! We watch the complete series every year! (sic).’

While one very excited fan gushed: ‘NEW GAVIN AND STACEY TRAILER !!! I AM NOT OK!!’

Gavin and Stacey is written by and co-stars Ruth and James, and they recently admitted the first draft of the special wasn’t ‘good enough’.

The talented pair feared they were being ‘naive’ about plans for a one-off revival when they were struggling with the script almost a decade after the show came to an end.

James told Radio Times magazine: ‘We’d confused ourselves in thinking there needed to be an absolute narrative arc – there was so much in the story, there was no room for the characters to breathe.

Gavin and Stacey was broadcast on BBC Three, BBC Two and BBC One from May 2007 until January 2010 for three series. 

The one-hour episode will air on Christmas Day 2019 on BBC One.
