Gay marriage supporter rants at immigrant ‘No’ voters

A gay marriage supporter has been caught on camera abusing and aggressively swearing at ‘No’ case campaigners on a busy street.

The young man with stubble and a black earring was videoed shouting at a man and a woman as they handed out ‘It’s OK to vote No’ pamphlets at Chatswood on Sydney’s North Shore.

Standing on Victoria Avenue, near the entrance to a Westfield shopping mall, he aggressively swears at them for being against same-sex marriage.

‘I respect equal rights. People like you in this country are what are bringing this f***ing country down,’ he says.

‘You’ve come here. We’ve accepted you into this country.’

When the woman replies they have accepted him into this country, he ramps up his aggression.

‘I’m Australian, both my parents are Australian,’ he said.

The young man brings up his indigenous heritage after a male ‘No’ campaigner asks him to stop being racist.

‘I’ve got Aboriginal family. I’m not being racist at all,’ he said.

‘You’re being a f***ing d***head by voting ‘No’.’

The 30-second confrontation ends with the young man swearing several times at the ‘No’ campaigners, as he stands across the road from The Concourse theatre and library complex.

‘F*** you, f*** you. Respect people’s rights,’ he shouts as bemused onlookers walk past.

When a woman points out it is their democratic right to campaign against gay marriage, he shouts back: ‘Your right to be a dumb c***.’

The confrontation was uploaded on to the Facebook page of northern Sydney based ‘No’ campaigner Robert Assaf, who was earlier this month confronted by two woman aggressively tearing down his posters at Gladesville.

This latest confrontation occurred at the edge of the North Sydney electorate, where the openly-gay Liberal member Trent Zimmerman is one of the Turnbull Government’s most vocal gay marriage supporters.

Acts of aggression appear to have heightened as households return Australian Bureau of Statistics forms as part of the $122 million voluntary postal vote survey on redefining marriage.

Voters are urged to post their ballots by October 27 to make the November 7 deadline.
