The Mercedes man edged Oscar Piastri of McLaren and home favorite Logan Sargent of Williams in third. Russell led the way with a lap time of 1:34.093.

Max Verstappen was fourth and Lewis Hamilton, Russell’s Mercedes teammate, was down in eighth.

It meant that Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were unable to finish their laps and ended the session in 16th and 17th respectively.

For Sainz, it represented more frustration as it was he who drove over the loose drain cover on Thursday, causing significant damage to his Ferrari and the abandonment of first practice after just eight minutes.

But attention now turns to qualifying for the race, which begins at around midnight local time.
