George Weah to become president of Liberia

George Weah will be elected president of Liberia after dominating Tuesday’s run-off election in his homeland.

Ex-Chelsea footballer Weah has won 61.5% of the vote with 98.1% of ballots counted meaning he is set to be elected as the next president of the west African nation.  

Weah’s nearest opponent is 73-year-old Joseph Boakai, who has claimed just a 38.5% share of the vote. 

George Weah will become the new president of Liberia succeeding Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

He will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who was the country’s first female leader, in Liberia’s first democratic handover of power in 73 years.

Weah entered politics following his retirement from football in 2002 after a career which saw him play for Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.

He was the first and only African footballer to win FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d’Or, claiming both honours in 1995.
