PSG’s hijack of the move however has been successful, after the Parisians offered the 30-year-old more lucrative terms and guaranteed a three-year contract.

According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, the French giants have offered the box-to-box midfielder an annual salary worth more than £8.6million – after tax – on a three-year deal.

Wijnaldum will sign the deal but officially become a PSG player at the end of the month, when his current contract in place with Liverpool expires.

The Dutchman was a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s set-up, and featured in every Premier League game of the recent campaign.

Wijnaldum waves goodbye to Liverpool after five years at Anfield. The Dutchman has lifted the Premier League and Champions League during his time in Merseyside, playing 237 games for Klopp’s side.

Meanwhile, Barca have turned their attentions to capturing Memphis Depay after missing out on the midfielder.

The Dutch international has long been a target of Ronald Koeman’s and, like Wijnaldum, his contract has expired this season.
