German behemoth tent took 40 people and one week to build

  • It resembled a Gothic cathedral and even had a church bell installed in one of the two 15-metre-high towers
  • Black tents are traditionally used by scout groups all over Germany and appear in some striking combinations

Tents, on the whole, don’t tend to be labelled as ‘dramatic’.

But this German behemoth most certainly deserves that description.

It was used for a World Youth Day scout meeting in Dusseldorf and took 40 scouts one entire week to build.

It resembled a cathedral and even had a church bell installed in one of the two towers, which rose up to a height of 15 metres.

It was used at the 2005 event for workshops and discussions – and visitors were able to climb up to the towers for a view of the surrounds.

The tents for this were supplied by Black Castle, a registered scout association.

It told MailOnline Travel: ‘We are a group of scouts from all over Germany who are interested in building huge black tent constructions.

‘These black tents are the traditional German scout tents. You can combine the single ones to build impressive constructions.

‘When our Black Castle team is asked to build a black tent construction like the 2005 World Youth Day one we contact the local scout groups to borrow their black tents.’

It said that while it took a week to put up, it was down in one day.

If you want this one for Glastonbury – best to get there early.
