German Olympian slammed for skating to Schindler’s List

A German figure skater has caused an uproar on social media after she performed to the score of the film Schindler’s List.

Nicole Schott chose the beloved 1993 Holocaust film’s theme song, titled Theme from Schindler’s List, for her long program on Thursday night at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The film became a trending topic on Twitter as users accused the 21-year-old of insensitivity and tastelessness over her music choice.

While some Twitter users commented that no one should be skating to the somber movies’ music at all, many pointed out that a German skater, particularly, should have considered the choice more carefully.

‘NO ONE SHOULD BE SKATING TO SCHINDLER’S LIST,’ said USA TODAY columnist Nancy Armour.

Twitter user David Struve added: ‘The German figure skater is skating to music from Schindler’s List.

‘ABORT ABORT ABORT! I repeat, do NOT skate to that! What are you doing Germany!’

Unfortunately for Schott, despite all the attention, she did not place in the event, in which Russian Alina Zagitova took the gold.

The album, composed by John Williams, won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

The movies’ music has often been used on the rink, and it’s not the first time a German figure skater has performed to the score.

Just months after its release, as USA Today points out, two-time Olympic gold medalist Katarina Witt.

While Witt’s performance was not at an Olympic event, the Schindler’s List score was also used by Russian figure skater Yulia Lipnitskaya during the 2014 Sochi Games, where she won a gold medal.

Even popular NBC Olympic commentator Jhonny Weir has skated to the theme song, performing it at the Duluth Ice Forum in 2003.
