WHAT TO DO

To trim your waist and smooth ‘love handles’, try this exercise, says celebrity personal trainer Nadya Fairweather (u-shape.co.uk).

Balance on your side, with both your knees bent, propping yourself up on one arm. Imagine you can draw a straight line from knee to hip to shoulder and ear.

Keep your top arm extended up to the sky. Push your hip up as high as you can, then drop it low. Go for 12-15 repetitions. Turn and try the other side. If it’s too easy, repeat with both legs in a side ‘plank’ position.

WHAT TO EAT

According to nutritionist Shona Wilkinson (shonawilkinson.com), so-called ‘love handles’ are made up of visceral fat that adds padding to your belly, sides and the back of your midsection. The solution is to eat unprocessed whole foods.

Eggs are especially good at breakfast, as they fill you up and help you feel fuller for longer — which will stop you reaching for a sugary snack later in the day.

If your love handles seem to have developed during the menopause, then try adding flaxseeds to your diet. They contain ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which helps to balance your hormones.

Lastly, pears contain pectin, which binds with fat and, therefore, reduces how much you absorb. Eat one half-an-hour before a large meal.
