A pair of ‘ghost hunters’ are claiming to have captured the stormy spectre of the legendary Gray Man during Hurricane Florence in the U.S state of North Carolina.

According to folklore originating in the neighbouring state of South Carolina, the Gray Man appears during stormy weather to warn residents of imminent devastation.

He is believed to have first appeared in 1822, but was sighted before Hurricane Hazel in 1954 and more recently just before Hurricane Hugo arrived in 1989.

A transparent spectral figure appears to be walking along the pier in the footage posted by The Ghost Guys Go Youtube channel yesterday

Now, footage uploaded by The Ghost Guys Go YouTube channel during a live stream yesterday shows a transparent figure appearing to walk along a pier, which is being pummeled by wind, rain and strong waves.

The legend says that the Gray Man is the ghost of a young sailor who was returning to Pawleys Island during a storm to ask a woman for her hand in marriage.

The storm caused him to be thrown from his horse into quicksand, and he died before he could propose to the girl.

Later, when a hurricane was approaching the island, the girl was visited by a ghost who warned her to leave immediately.

She persuaded her family to go to safety, and upon their return they saw that although the island was in ruins, their home had been spared.

Hurricane Florence has left 31 people dead with the death toll expected to rise as experts warn that the next week could bring the most destructive flooding in North Carolina’s history.

The state’s governor, Roy Cooper, said the ‘epic storm’ was still an immediate danger and thousands of evacuated residents have been told to stay away.

‘Some areas have not seen the worst flooding yet. This is a monumental disaster for our state,’ Governor Cooper said.

‘If you are refusing to leave during this mandatory evacuation, you need to do things like notify your legal next of kin because the loss of life is very, very possible,’ Mayor Mitch Colvin said.
