Ghoulish break in at famed NYC cemetery 

  • Woodlawn Cemetery is where some of New York’s most famous are buried
  • Police say six caskets were removed from their slots at the cemetery on Tuesday 
  • One casket was pried open but it is not yet clear if anything was stolen

A famous Bronx cemetery where some of New York’s most famous figures are buried was broken into, investigators have said.

Six caskets were moved around the mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in Woodlawn Heights Tuesday afternoon, Detectives said.

One coffin was pried open, but it is unclear yet if anything was stolen. 

However, an officer did say it is possible some bones may be missing and medical examiners are investigating.

A casket that predates the 1940s and another which is just a few years old were among those moved. 

Security said they noticed the mausoleum door was ajar on Tuesday morning but the time on the actual break in is unknown, reports NBC New York. 

Woodlawn Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in New York City. It is a designated National Historic Landmark and has more than 1,300 mausoleums in over 400 acres. 

Joseph Pulitzer, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis are just a few of the notable people buried at the site.
