Giant clouds billow into the sky as firefighters battle huge warehouse blaze in east London

Firefighters are battling a huge blaze in east London after a two-storey warehouse caught fire this morning. 

Twenty fire engines and 120 firefighters were at the scene in Leyton with giant clouds billowing into the sky at the industrial estate in Orient Way.  

Residents have been warned to keep their doors and windows shut to avoid the smoke as pictures showed a huge blaze in the sky.

Fire crews responded before 5.30am with more than 70 calls to 999 alerting the emergency services to the blaze and around 60 per cent of the building alight.

Station Manager Rod Wainwright, who was at the scene, said: ‘There are large volumes of smoke.

‘I would advise all nearby residents in the area to keep their doors and windows closed until the smoke plume has diminished.’  

Fire crews from Leytonstone, Homerton, Walthamstow, Stoke Newington, Stratford and surrounding fire stations are at the scene, the London Fire Brigade said. 

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage. Police in Waltham Forest were also assisting the fire brigade at the scene.
