A mother-of-two was left horrified after discovering a giant snake sunning itself in her backyard.

Benita Blunden was home from work caring for her sick daughter when she encountered the carpet snake.

Moments before the discovery, her children were building cubby houses and playing in their suburban Pullenvale backyard, only 15 kilometres west of Brisbane city.

The family live on acreage, and Ms Blunden told the Courier Mail she has always taught her children to be mindful of snakes.

‘I’ve always taught them to make a big noise, check where you’re going. But I was in a rush, walked outside with the washing and didn’t do any of that,’ she said.

Despite the lessons she provides her children, she admitted she did get nervous when it first caught her eye.

‘I won’t tell you what word I said but I got one hell of a surprise. We do have them around but we don’t usually see anything that big so close to the house,’ she said.

Ms Blunden caught the snake on camera, as it slithered through her back garden.

‘He was there for about an hour and he couldn’t have cared less that I was there. He just sunned himself there watching me hang out the clothes.’

The enormous snake appeared at ease despite the woman’s close proximity
