The inert gas may be produced by one of two process –
- Ships with auxiliary or main boilers use the flue gas, which contains 2% to 4% of oxygen by volume. This is scrubbed with sea water to remove sulphur dioxide, particulates and to cool it. Then blown it into tanks through a fixed pipe distribution system.
- In diesel engined ships the engine exhaust gas will contain high oxygen level for use as an inert gas. An inert gas generating plant may be used to produce gas by burning diesel or any light fuel oil. Then the gas is scrubbed and used as boiler flue gas.
Non-return barriers in the form of water seal deck and no return valve are maintained between machinery space and deck distribution system to ensure no liquid petroleum or petroleum gas passes back through the system to machinery space.
