A girl has died and a woman and a boy are in critical condition following a collision in Melbourne.

Police were told a Ford Territory was travelling along Hopkins Road in Truganina when it overtook a Honda SUV and collided head-on with a Ford Focus about midnight on Saturday.

A 10-year-old girl who had been travelling in the Focus died at the scene, while the female driver and a young boy were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. A male passenger suffered serious injuries.

The male Territory driver was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries but the five occupants in the Honda SUV, which was also hit by his car, were not hurt.
