A 12-year-old girl has been left fighting for her life after getting into trouble while swimming with friends in a river in Oxfordshire.

Emergency services arrived at the River Windrush off New Mill Lane, Witney, at around 12.20pm today.

The youngster was then air-lifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where she remains in a critical condition.

It is believed the girl was swimming alongside friends when she got into difficulty.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: ‘Thames Valley Police, working with partners from the fire service and South Central Ambulance Service were called to reports that a 12-year-old girl had got into difficulties in the river Windrush at around 12.35pm.

‘The girl has been air-lifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, and is in a critical condition.

‘The girls’ next of kin have been informed.’
