Girl discovers security cameras inside her Queensland school bathroom in gross invasion of privacy

A young school girl has shared a photo of a CCTV camera in her school’s female toilets, which officials claims is for student’s safety.

The student from Jubilee Christian College in Atherton, Queensland, took a picture of the camera in the corner of the female toilets before sharing her concerns with the school.

The school did not respond to the student’s concerns after speaking with the girl’s guardian, according to The Courier Mail.

The guardian said they could only imagine the outrage from parents if this were a public toilet, however as a private and independent school the Christian College is not overseen by the Department of Education.

Instead the school is a member of Independent Schools Queensland and Christian Colleges Australia with ISQ executive officer Mark Spencer telling The Courier Mail each school has a high level of autonomy.

‘Many Christian schools, and indeed schools more generally, have installed CCTV monitoring for the safety of students and security of property,’ he said.

Meanwhile the school’s board of directors made a public statement regarding the use of the cameras, defending the decision as ‘invaluable’.

‘Our cameras in the amenities block are positioned to view the hand basins and walkways only, and do not provide any view of the activities in the cubicles,’ the board’s Floyd Risser said.

Only the principal, vice principal and the business manager have access to the recorded footage, which doesn’t pick up sound.

It was also revealed the cameras had first been installed in 2015 with the school claiming they had no received any complaints in the past.

Despite the school’s independence Queensland’s Attorney General Yvette D’Ath announced that the Queensland Law Reform Commission would focus on the laws around ‘civil surveillance’.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Jubilee Christian College for comment.
