A Texas woman known as ‘Girl in the Closet’ after she was rescued from the clutches of her abusive parents who tortured and raped her for years, has been charged with the sexual assault of a child.
Lauren Kavanaugh made headlines when she was rescued from her family’s mobile home in Texas in June 2001, where she was abused from the age of two to eight.
Kavanaugh, now 25, faces charges of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, authorities announced on Wednesday.
Kavanaugh was arrested by Lewisville Police in Texas following a tip received on Monday.
The teen told officers that she had been in a ‘sexual relationship’ with Kavanaugh for two months, according to Dallas News.
The two met through a Facebook account called ‘The Lauren Kavanaugh Story’ where Kavanaugh offered support and friendship to victims of abuse, according to detectives.
That page has since been taken down.
Kavanaugh was dubbed the ‘Girl in the Closet’ after she was rescued in 2001 at the age of eight from her Texas mobile home where she lived in a filthy 4 by 8 ft closet and was horrifically abused and starved by her parents. Kavanaugh pictured left in 2017 and at high school graduation right
Kavanaugh admitted to detectives that she had a ‘sexual relationship’ with the teen and was then arrested.
The two allegedly got into a relationship and the victim’s parents said that Kavanaugh was living with them, according to NBC.
She’s being held in Denton County Jail with bail set at $10,000.
Police suspect that there may be other victims and are urging parents to speak with their children to see if they’ve had any inappropriate contact with Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh suffered horrific abuse as a child where she lived in a 4 by 8 feet closet in her family’s mobile home in Hutchins and was starved, raped, and tortured by her mother Barbara Atkinson and stepfather Kenneth Atkinson.
A neighbor tipped off authorities to the abuse and Kavanaugh was rescued in 2001. She weighed just 25.6 pounds when she was found.
A doctor later testified the little girl had been sexually abused so badly that she needed surgery, according to People Magazine.
The abusive parents are serving life sentences for felony injury to a child and will be eligible for parole in 2031.
