Girl records song to mother after diagnosed with incurable cancer

A brave schoolgirl has penned a heartbreaking song for her mother who is dying from cancer and is now selling it on CD to help fly her aunt home from Australia.

Kiera Walsh, 11, of Neath, south Wales, wrote the song in her bedroom after her mother Ceri Griffiths, 35, was told she had incurable cervical cancer.

Recorded in the Sonic One Studios in Llangennech, the emotional lyrics read: ‘I’m sitting here in my room, trying not to cry, I keep telling myself to wipe those tears and stand up straight, and build yourself up again, build yourself.

‘I can see it in your eyes, every day is a battle inside, and you just can’t escape it.’

The youngster unveiled her song in front of her drama group, leaving her classmates and teachers in tears, prompting the suggestion that she record it to help raise funds for mother-of-three Ceri.

The song is called Build Yourself and is being sold on CD for £3 from next week, with 170 pre-orders already bought in just four days.

Speaking about how she decided to write the heart-wrenching song, Kiara said: ‘I was quite upset about my mother because she’s ill and I was just bored so I started writing a song.

‘I sang it in front of my drama group and they loved it,’ the brave school girl added.

Andrew Bowen, who runs the Kite Academy of Performing Arts, has been helping Kiera to raise awareness.

He said: ‘When I first heard the song I said to myself there and then that I had to do something with this.

‘It’s so good. So I got a backing track together. I then spoke to her mother Ceri and we both agreed to get it recorded.’

Ceri, who is mother to Kiera and her two siblings aged three and nine, was told the devastating news she has cervical cancer back in October, however seeing Kiera record her a song has helped her stay strong.

She said: ‘Watching her do this has been such a big highlight, and I know this isn’t the end of it all.

‘I’ve never seen my daughter’s face light up like this and I’m so excited for her. I’m so grateful.’
