Girls as young as 10 are using code words from the Nando’s menu to cover up sexual texts, research has found.

‘Peri-peri’, one of the restaurant’s sauces, refers to a well-endowed male while ‘coleslaw’ means a bit on the side.

Internal reports were carried out by SafeToNet, an internet safety service that uses artificial intelligence to provide real-time advice to children to help tackle online issues such as cyberbullying, sextortion and grooming.

The software company, which screens social media messaging apps such as Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and Whatsapp, analysed over 65million texts since November last year of more than 50,000 children.

It found that girls as young as 10 are referring to code words from the Afro-Portuguese restaurant’s menu and generally used the most sexually explicit language.

But despite 10-year-old girls being the most common users of sexually explicit references, teenage boys were found to be more abusive and aggressive.

The company uses a smart keyboard technology to detect risks and filter harmful messages before they are sent.

It also uses a safety indicator for parents, which analyses the time of day or night messages are sent and compares texts to other children of a similar age.

The service says it respects children’s privacy, with parents unable to see their children’s photos, messages or contacts.

According to The Guardian, Richard Pursey, SafeToNet’s CEO, said: ‘We weren’t expecting to see that.

‘We thought it would be more likely to be boys than girls and in the 12 to 13 age group.’
