Women’s sporting events should get ‘listed status’ and be shown on free-to-air TV, the Culture Secretary has claimed.
Nicky Morgan said she wants to ‘build on the momentum’ of the Women’s World Cup and inspire wider audiences with the achievements of female sports stars.
Mrs Morgan confirmed she has written to TV rights holders to advocate adding major women’s sporting events to the ‘crown jewels’ list.
This currently includes the FA Cup final, the Wimbledon tennis finals, the Grand National and the Rugby World Cup final.
Yesterday, Mrs Morgan told the Royal Television Society conference: ‘I want to… make sure future generations of female sporting talent can be inspired by who they see on their screens.
‘So where a men’s event is listed, the women’s equivalent would be too.’
Gender equality charity Women In Sport said: ‘Visibility is crucial in helping to raise the profile of women’s sport but also to normalise it.’
