Glaxosmithkline chief Emma Walmsley celebrates second successful vaccine trial

Glaxo boss Emma Walmsley is bracing for a raid by Wall Street activist Elliott Managemen

Underfire Glaxosmithkline boss Emma Walmsley has been given a second shot in the arm in as many days after the drug-maker revealed positive trial results for another potential Covid vaccine.

Mid-stage trials of the jab it is working on with Canada-based Medicago triggered a strong immune response in patients.

It comes a day after Glaxo said a vaccine it is developing with France’s Sanofi yielded positive trial results. 

Walmsley is bracing for a raid by Wall Street activist Elliott Management, which has taken a sizeable stake in Glaxo.

That has triggered scrutiny of her leadership, including the failure to develop a coronavirus vaccine while rivals such as Pfizer and Astrazeneca raced ahead with their own jabs.

Medicago and Sanofi are among the firms Glaxo is providing with its adjuvant technology which boosts the effectiveness of vaccines. 

Thomas Breuer, Glaxo’s chief medical officer for vaccines, said: ‘We are delighted to see that the results suggest a very strong immune response.’
