Gloucester are set to sign Leinster and Ireland fly-half Ross Byrne.

After finishing second bottom of the Gallagher Premiership last season, the Cherry & Whites have been much improved this term and are currently third in the table.

Head coach George Skivington has introduced a more attacking style of play at Kingsholm and has reaped the rewards with Wales internationals Tomos Williams and Gareth Anscombe leading the charge alongside the likes of Christian Wade and Santi Carreras.

Now, Skivington has added an Irish feel to his squad with Byrne to join for the 2025/26 campaign from Irish giants Leinster.

The 29-year-old has 22 caps and 56 points for Ireland, but after years playing back-up to Johnny Sexton, he has now fallen down the No 10 pecking order for the men in green behind young upstarts Sam Prendergast, Jack Crowley and Ciaran Frawley.

Byrne is not involved in Simon Easterby’s current Ireland Six Nations squad while he has also been usurped at club level with Leinster by new golden boy Prendergast and Frawley.

Byrne’s last Ireland appearance came against England in a World Cup warm-up game in August 2023.

His signing for Gloucester will likely bring his Test career to a close as to represent Ireland at international level. The country’s players must be employed at one of the country’s four provinces.

Byrne had previously been of interest to Leicester and French side Montpellier.

His signing is good news for Gloucester fans who were left disappointed by the news Argentina full-back Carreras is moving to Premiership leaders Bath.

Gloucester are expected to confirm Byrne’s signing in the coming weeks.
