  • Despite the havoc the women dove to the aid of the goanna when he ran off

A goanna has caused mayhem at a family picnic after invading their lunch on the beach.

In the video shared online, a goanna can be seen devouring a spread of licorice and cheese at The Basin off Palm Beach in Sydney.

The women who organised the picnic can be seen watching on in amusement, while also trying to make sure he didn’t eat anything he wasn’t supposed to.

One woman even falls as she tries to stop the reptile from eating olives and licorice.

The animal whips around as the woman tries to take away the forbidden treats, causing the group to scream before bursting into giggles.

Another reveller sighs: ‘This is why you don’t have picnics on the floor.’

The group watch on in both humour and horror as the goanna eats anything it can get reach – including a whole piece of cheese.

He even dives his head into a bread bag.

One of the women tries to shoo away the goanna.

She grabs a box and slams it on the ground to scare the goanna.

She repeats: ‘You can go away now. Go away!’

But the goanna seems unfazed and he continues to munch on the baguette.

One of the pinic-goes exclaim that there is no food left.

‘Now he’s going for the salami,’ another shouts.

Despite the havoc the goanna caused, the women didn’t want the animal to get hurt.

When the reptile ran off with a large piece of plastic and up a tree they attempted to get it off him.

Worried about the distress it was causing the animal the women go to find a ranger.

The video was uploaded with the caption: ‘We initially thought it was cute until we had to vacate our picnic and watch it devour all of our food.’
