Outrage: Gogglebox viewers have angrily called for long-running show stars Ellie and Izzi Warner to be removed after they made a controversial #MeToo joke during Friday’s episode

In the episode, Ellie, 28, was describing the modified, adult version of the playground game ‘tag’ with the TV star and her friends running around grabbing each others ‘boobs and bum’ and yelling ‘Me too’ when they were caught.

She recalled: ‘I played Tag not so long ago… but we called it #MeToo and basically we had to chase each other and either grab somebody’s boob or bum.

‘And they were then it.’

Her sister Izzi was quick to reprimand her for the comment, adding: ‘I don’t think you are supposed to make a game out of the #MeToo movement Ellie.’

But despite Izzi scolding her sister and not actually making the remark herself, furious Gogglebox viewers called for both sisters to be removed from the show.

Taking to Twitter in the aftermath of the controversial joke, one person wrote: ‘#Gogglebox ellie and her sister are just vile and uneducated . Joke about meetoo? Why are they still on @C4Gogglebox @Channel4?! #Gogglebox.’

While another furious watcher wrote: ‘Wow. Disgusted with the woman on Gogglebox who made a game out of the meetoomovement. Even more disgusted that Gogglebox included that in the episode.’

Calling for the girls to be axed, a third tweeted: ‘Can’t believe someone made a joke game out of #metoo where you play Tag and grab each others breast or bottom. Izzy and Ellie need removing from #Gogglebox.’

With another angrily adding: ‘It’s called Tag, not Tig. And making a game out of meetoo is just SO bloody disrespectful! Absolutely appalling #gogglebox.’

However, some viewers were quick to leap to their defence, with many saying that it was simply a joke.

One person tweeted: ‘LOL at all the snowflakes getting offended by Ellie & Izzy from #Gogglebox joke about meetoo. Being a snowflake must be such miserable life.’

With another writing: ‘WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE, THIS IS HILARIOUS AND I AM DYING. Life sucks. It’s super short, then we die. The least we can do it laugh whenever we can in the meantime.’

‘@ellieandizzi #meetoo #tig sounds hilarious! #Gogglebox people need to lighten up, it was a joke,’ defended a third.

With another adding: ‘I don’t watch #Gogglebox but gather two sisters made a game of tag based on the meetoo movement. Bad taste? Yes. Sackable offence? Not for me to decide. But you know, if you don’t like it you could always change channels. Or hit the off button.’

Me Too is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual abuse, particularly in the workplace, with the hashtag going viral in 2017.

Gogglebox continues Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.
