Gogglebox star Jenny Newby forced to watch the show’s BAFTA win from hospital after being rushed for a minor operation just days before

Gogglebox star Jenny Newby missed out on the star-studded BAFTA Television Awards on Sunday after heading to hospital just days before for an operation.

The unlucky timing meant that the 66-year-old star was missing from the stage while the show bagged the Constructed Reality award.

In true Gogglebox fashion, Jenny had to watch the joyous moment on TV – but this time from hospital as she recovers from the ‘minor’ operation.

Under the weather: Gogglebox star Jenny Newby, 66, was forced to watch the show’s BAFTA win on Sunday from hospital, after being rushed for a minor operation just days before

According to The Sun, Jenny’s co-star Lee Riley explained backstage: ‘Jenny was supposed to be here, but she’s had to have a minor operation.

“It came this week and she couldn’t turn it down. She’s actually still in hospital so she’ll be watching from there from her hospital bed.’

Lee appeared on stage without Jenny on Sunday afternoon to accept the award, but was joined by his other cast-mates and crew.

Showing his gratitude for the win, he said: ‘It’s a pleasure to be stood here this evening. To collect this award for past and present families who have been on Gogglebox.

‘It’s an honour to get it for them. We’d like to thank Channel 4, as usual – thank you so much. And of course, Studio Lambert, and the production team. The crews who go up and down the country every weekday to make us look better than what we are. So thank you.’

Lee looked dapper for the ceremony, donning a satin blazer with gold embellishing covering one half.

Gogglebox creator Stephen Lambert then took the stage to explain that the channel took a ‘chance’ on the show, and urged the government to keep it public.

But despite the speech, fans were confused as to why Jenny wasn’t on stage – taking to Twitter to express their wonder.

Some also asked why other stars of the show were missing, such as Pete and Sophie Sandiford.

A pair who did grace the BAFTA stage was couple Mica Ven and Marcus Luther – who sported matching ensembles for the evening.

They posed for a series of red carpet snaps with Lee, as they held onto their newly acclaimed trophy.
