Gold Coast hound saves owner and son from drowning death

Hero dog Jett has saved his owners’ lives

The Gold Coast has been blessed with an unexpected hero after a dog saved the lives of its owner and his son on Sunday.

A houseboat owned by Samir Rekic is now the bottom of Byron River along with everything he owns, but thanks to their pet dog Jett, he and his son Byron are safe.

‘We’re very lucky that [we were able to] save my son,’ he told 7News.

‘Of course, he’s my baby.

‘We’re just lucky we weren’t in deeper waters.’

Once the dog had woken him, Mr Rekic noticed that the boat was tipping.

He woke his son, Byron, and in a moment of quick thinking, pushed him out into the water through an open window.

As it turned out, Mr Rekic acted just in time, as the force of the sucking water soon smashed the glass.

‘I thought he was joking for a second, because that’s a rare thing, for a boat to sink,’ Byron said.

‘The second we got off, it was basically sunk.’

All of their possessions are now ruined, having been sucked out of the smashed windows and into the ocean.

Mr Rekic purchased the boat two months ago and now has almost nothing left, but is happy to be alive.

It is fortunate that the pair managed to escape the boat when they did, as the exterior doors were locked and the interior doors were pinned by the force of the water.

The pair are now searching for shelter, and taking special care of Jett.
