Gold Coast influencer Sophie Guidolin is slammed for ‘cultural appropriation’

Gold Coast influencer is accused of ‘cultural appropriation’ after asking fans whether she should dress up as Pocahontas or Princess Jasmine for Halloween

An influencer has been accused of ‘cultural appropriation’ after asking her followers if she should dress up as Pocahontas or Princess Jasmine for a Halloween party.

Sophie Guidolin, 32, posted a poll on Instagram Stories so fans could help her decide, but she faced criticism because she is white and Pocahontas and Princess Jasmine are both women of colour.

Pocahontas was a Native American woman from the 17th century whose life story was fictionalised in the 1995 Disney film of the same name. Princess Jasmine is a fictional Arabian character from the 1992 Disney animation Aladdin.

Over Influencers, an Instagram account that documents social media gaffes, reposted Guidolin’s poll, leading some critics to accuse her of cultural insensitivity.

‘It’s 2021. People have been pulled up for this before. What planet are you living on to think this is still okay? Let me guess, they’re white girls making a way as influencers living on the Gold Coast,’ one person commented.

‘The two princesses you just shouldn’t dress up as,’ another wrote.

‘Why not just go ‘black-face’? Would be same-same. #fail,’ a third added.

One critic pointed out: ‘Pocahontas was based on a 12-year-old native girl who was kidnapped and raped and died in London when early settlers stole her from her land.’

Guidolin deleted her social media poll following the backlash.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Sophie Guidolin for comment.

It comes after Guidolin spoke about her love life by confirming she had reunited with her ex-boyfriend Ryan.

‘Are you back with your ex?’ one fan asked on Instagram recently, to which she responded: ‘Sure am.’

Guidolin previously dated Married At First Sight star Jake Edwards, but they parted ways after only a few months together.
