Squid Game’s O Yeong-su wins his first Golden Globe at age 77 for incredible performance as Player 001 in Netflix drama

Squid Game star O Yeong-su has won Best Supporting Actor in Television at this year’s Golden Globe for his role in the hit Netflix drama.

The 77-year-old South Korean actor, who has never won a Golden Globe before, earned the top prize for his portrayal of Oh II-nam, also referred to as The Host or Player 001.

O Yeong-su is the first Korean actor in Golden Globes history to win an award, and beat out the likes of Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Kieran Culkin (Succession), Mark Duplass (The Morning Show) and Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso).

His victory was announced at a private ceremony on Los Angeles on Monday, after this year’s live broadcast was cancelled due to backlash over a lack of diversity in nominations.

The Golden Globes is generally regarded as a good indicator of who will take home gold at the Academy Awards later in the year.

O Yeong-su began his acting career on the stage, appearing in over 200 theatre productions from 1967 before moving to film and television.

‘Things have changed quite a bit. Even when I go out to a cafe or somewhere like that, I now have to be aware of [how I appear to others]. It’s made me think, ‘Being famous is tough, too.’
