The Golden Hill Fort is hexagon shaped and as with many barracks was hidden from public view and was not clearly visible
The Fort became a Gunnery school from 1888-1903 before housing troops in the Second World War
Duncan Willard, director of Spence Willard said: ‘Rarely do such exciting opportunities like this present themselves and a purchase of the majority of this truly magnificent Grade I-listed structure is a one-off.
‘This site offers an investor an impressive return on their investment and indeed good asset management opportunities, by way of selling individual houses off, at a later date, or even rent.’
The property also includes electronic entry systems, mood lighting and quality heating systems with some of the terraces coming with balconies that look over the central water feature in the middle of the fort.
The building itself is enclosed by Golden Hill Country Park – owned by the Isle of Wight Council and managed by Gift To Nature Trust- which has a network of attractive rural footpaths.
The site is located between the affluent historic harbour town of Yarmouth and the village of Freshwater.
In 2007 the fortress had long since been offloaded by the military, and Essex property developer Kevin Clarke bought the dilapidated structure, which then housed a small private museum, a cinema and cafe.
