Gordon Ramsay loses bid to install two £40,000 ‘igloos’ at his £7m London mansion

Gordon Ramsay wanted to add two £40,000 furnished ‘igloos’ to his expansive garden in Battersea

Gordon Ramsay has lost his bid to install two £40,000 ‘igloos’ at his £7 million London mansion, after David Beckham and Guy Ritchie installed chic huts at their homes.

In April, the chef lodged plans for the fully furnished log cabins to be installed in the back garden of his eight-bedroom home in Battersea.

But Wandsworth Council bosses have rejected the proposal, citing the need for a tree survey.

The rejection of further living space comes as Ramsay and his wife Tana, 44, welcomed their fifth child, Oscar, in April.

The chic cabins have three outside windows, a small door and are clad in spruce shingles and plywood battens.

Inside, the luxury pods include a fully functional kitchen, double bed, electric heating, a shower, storage, power points and a TV cable. They are made in Estonia before being shipped to the UK.

Ramsay is following a trend set by David Beckham and Guy Ritchie, who brought similar ‘igloo-style’ huts from the same Estonian suppliers and had them placed at their country homes in Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.

Under the proposals submitted to the council, the cabins known as the ‘Model 4’, would be positioned facing each other at the bottom of the expansive garden of the eight-bedroom Victorian home he shares with wife Tana and their four older children Megan, 21, twins Jack and Holly, 19, and Matilda, 17.

However, council officials have written to Ramsay twice and told him that the plans aren’t acceptable because he hasn’t included a tree survey which evaluates how the development would impact on trees and vegetation in his back garden.

Sue Botley, from Wandsworth Council, wrote in a letter last week: ‘I refer to your planning application received on 15 April 2019 concerning the above site.

‘Your application cannot be acknowledged or processed until the additional information requested below is provided and/or amendments are carried out. Tree survey required.’

She wrote an initial request in May however had to send out a second reminder after Ramsay’s planning consultants failed to respond.

Under the plans, the ‘modest’ structures will be almost 30ft long, around 7ft wide and almost 7ft high.

Ramsay’s planning consultants, added: ‘They will be for use by family and guests of the owners only.

‘Their use will be solely incidental to the enjoyment of the main property.’

He was inspired to buy the cabins after ex-England skipper David, 44, and his wife, Victoria, 45, forked out £14,000 on a triple sauna in a similar design at their £6 million Cotswold home.

Following its installation at the end of 2018, Beckham posted a picture on Instagram of himself relaxing on the terrace of the spruce shingle-clad bolthole with the caption: ‘Thank you to @iglucraft. I’m loving it with this cold weather right now.’

The Beckhams apparently took the plunge with their Scandinavian steam bath after David had a go in Ritchie’s hot room at the film director’s 50th birthday party held at his country estate in Wiltshire last year.

Ritchie posted a photo on Instagram of himself and Beckham, dressed in a bathrobe, enjoying the sauna, which he jokingly captioned: ‘The sauna is brilliant. It is great to have a lake, a canoe, a waterfall and a husband with you.’

Beckham replied: ‘Happy birthday love…’

Estonians are ecstatic that their love of a good sauna – which is much drier than a more humid Russian sauna or steamy Turkish experience – is now shared by British celebrities, with stories appearing in the country’s media about the increasing devotion to their national pastime and Iglucraft.

And only last month, the growing garden sauna brigade was joined by EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite when she forked out £12,200 on a similar accessory at her £1.7 million home in north London supplied by the same manufacturer.

Tamzin, 48, who plays ‘Mel’ Owen in the BBC Soap, opted for a design big enough to house her and toyboy, Tom Child, plus four more friends.
