Gordon Ramsay starts building new holiday home in Cornwall

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has left his neighbours in a wealthy Cornwall village with a sour taste as building work starts to bulldoze a 1920s house and replace it with a white-washed mansion.

The chef, who has four children with wife Tana, angered residents in the village of Rock with his plans to demolish a 1920s property he bought for £4.4million.

Despite local objections Ramsay won planning permission in 2016 to demolish the property and build two new houses — one with two kitchens.

The new house, which will have two kitchens, a swimming pool, a wine cellar and four en suite bathrooms, will be around 100 yards from the beach.

Mr Ramsay was also given the green light to construct a three-bedroom grass-covered boathouse just a stone’s throw from water at high tide.

Residents fear this new property will be visible along the Camel Estuary coastline in the enclave known as ‘Kensington-On-Sea’ because of wealthy interlopers with large holiday homes in the area.

Mr Ramsay also spent £4million on a ‘stopgap’ six-bedroom home in the village of Trebetherick, while his nearby holiday retreat is being rebuilt.

That property has six bedrooms, four bathrooms, three receptions rooms, a swimming pool, tennis court and almost 2.5 acres of land.

Demand for second homes around Rock and Polzeath in Cornwall has sent house prices spiralling to an average of £826,000.

The garden annexe will have three bedrooms and space for a boat store.

Neighbours were furious with the council’s decision to approve the plans, receiving 24 letters of objection about the proposed development.

Pippa Burrows said that the existing house was built of local stone, praising the ‘mellowness of the home that looks as though it has emerged from the soil on which it was built’ and bemoaning that ‘another beautiful house is yet again being knocked down to build an eyesore that is not in fitting with this area of great beauty’.

Victoria Savile, said the existing house was ‘one of the nicest traditional beachfront properties, part of the charm of Rock’, adding that the development will ‘destroy the area’.

Mr Ramsay’s decision to build a second house closer to the beach was condemned as a precedent that would ‘open the floodgates’ for more development near to the sea.

A spokesperson for Ramsay tried to diffuse the row, saying at the time: ‘Gordon, Tana and the family are very much looking forward to spending time in their new home in Cornwall.

‘They are committed to contributing to, and delighted to be investing in, the future of the Cornish community they will hopefully be a part of for many years.’
