A Grade I-listed castle with its own moat, dungeon, three converted turrets and a chapel has gone on the market.

Caverswall Castle – with it’s 20-acres of surrounding land in Staffordshire – was originally built on the site of an Anglo-Saxon Manor in 1275.

The property boasts a drawing room, a library, a dining room, eight suites, six further bedrooms and a kitchen.

There are also three converted turrets, a converted gatehouse and games and billiards rooms – all surrounded by an impressive moat.

After falling into disrepair by the end of the 16th century, the medieval castle was rebuilt by wealthy local merchant Matthew Cradock – the Mayor of Stafford – in 1615.

Cradock was elected MP for Stafford in 1621 and was reelected in 1624, 1625 and 1628.

He held the seat until 1629 when King Charles dispensed with parliament for eleven years.

Although experiencing multiple owners and uses Caverwall Castle remains as Cradock created it.

The following years saw a few later editions including the conversion of a number of the turrets.

The property has recently undergone a full restoration and refurbishment programme with the current owner bringing the castle up to a high standard and improving running costs.

Caverswall Castle is on the market with estate agent Jackson-Stops and the price will be provided on asking.
