A grandfather in Oregon purchased his family an unexpected Christmas gift: a yellow school bus.

Doug Hayes surprised his 10 grandchildren with the bus that has the words ‘Grandfather Express’ written across the side on Wednesday at his home in Gladstone.

Hayes revealed to KSBW why he thought purchasing the bus would be a good idea for the little ones.

‘The kids have always said, “Gee whiz, I like our school, but we would like to be able to have a school bus,”‘ he said.

According to Hayes, five of his grandchildren attend Paideia Classical Christian School, a small private school that isn’t big enough to have its own buses, which means their parents have to take them to school each day.

The other five grandchildren aren’t school-age yet.

Hayes told the station that the children live within about a 20-minute drive from his house.

From there, the school is only about 2 to 3 miles away.

He has plans to pick up the children each morning and take them to school before dropping the bus off at his house and taking his car to work.
