Grandmother forced to sleep on airport baggage carousel

Edith Steele, 74, had to sleep on a baggage carousel after long delays to Ryanair flights back from the continent

A grandmother was forced to sleep on an airport baggage carousel after her Ryanair flight home from Holland was cancelled.

Edith Steele, 74, and her daughter Wendy Erskine were due to fly back from Eindhoven to Edinburgh earlier this month when bad weather forced the budget airline to cancel the flight.

The mother and daughter were instead told to get on a coach to Brussels, where another flight was due to take off from the Belgian capital’s Charleroi airport.

But that flight was also cancelled, leaving the pair, from Fife, stranded and forced to bed down in the terminal building.

Ms Erskine, 51, said she slept beneath a sink in an airport toilet and her mother laid down on a baggage conveyor belt.

Ms Erskine told the Daily Record: ‘My mum has heart problems and had to sleep on a conveyor belt because the floor was so cold. It started up at 2am but thankfully she managed to get off.

‘There was no form of help or information and a sign was put up at the Ryanair desk saying the next flight would be on the 13th [two days later].’

The mother and daughter stayed in a hotel the following night before flying back two days after they originally planned to.

Ms Erskine told The Herald: ‘I won’t be going back to Charleroi or fly with Ryanair again… someone at the airport said it was our own fault for booking Ryanair.’

A spokesman for Ryanair said: ‘This flight from Eindhoven to Edinburgh was regrettably cancelled due to snowfall in Eindhoven.

‘All affected customers were contacted by email and SMS text message and advised of their options – a full refund, a free transfer on to the next available flight, or a free transfer on to an alternative routing.

‘These customers were transferred by coach to Brussels Charleroi where they were due to fly to Edinburgh on December 11.

‘This flight was subsequently and regrettably cancelled due to snow at Charleroi and customers were advised of their options by email and SMS text message.

‘We sincerely apologise for these weather cancellations, which were entirely beyond our control.’
