A 22-year-old man was charged with murder and attempted murder and is believed to be the couple’s grandson.
He was denied bail and is scheduled to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
South Australia Police confirmed the attack was ‘not random’ and ‘all parties are known to each other’.
Neighbour Abby Schipper told The Advertiser the 22-year-old looked ‘calm’ after he was arrested and sat on the kerb in handcuffs.
‘We saw (Marie) shaking (and) being taken away. She was walking. It’s sad,’ she said.
The couple were well known in the community and were both lifetime members of the McLaren Vale Bowling Club.

Mr Broadwood was the former president of the club and has been described as a ‘lovely man’, while his wife was a former secretary.
McLaren Vale Bowling Club secretary Peter Guerin said the couple were both passionate for sport and did a lot for the club.
‘Marie coached a lot of the people who are currently playing bowls. It’s a really sad day for everyone, they were much-loved and really well respected,’ he said.
‘We can’t believe something so tragic has happened to such loving people.’
