Grange Hill actor George A. Cooper dies aged 93

George A Cooper passed away aged 93 last Friday.

The Grange Hill star’s family revealed the actor died at a nursing home in Hampshire last Friday.

George played Mr Griffiths in the long-running children’s TV series between 1985 and 1992, starring in more than 100 episodes.

A funeral for the voice artist, who also starred in Violent Playground and Bless This House, will be held at Chichester Crematorium on December 6. 

George is survived by son Adam, who he shared with his late wife Shirley. She passed away in 2000.

The actor rose to fame for his role as Geoffrey Fisher in West End play Billy Liar nearly six decades ago, which was followed by a TV series between 1973–1974 based on the Keith Waterhouse novel.

George also had a recurring role in ITV’s Coronation Street from 1964 till 1971, where he portrayed devious businessman Willie Piggott, who found himself in a number of fiery arguments with his fellow Weatherfield residents.

In his most noticeable role to date, the Leeds native played miserable caretaker Mr Eric Griffiths in BBC’s Grange Hill from 1985 for seven years.

After nearly five decades in TV, film and theatre, George retired in 1995, with his last stint as Albert Collins in Casualty.

Fans took to Twitter in their droves to remember the talented star, as one wrote: ‘A wonderfully warm character and no doubt a gentleman. Rest In Peace Mr Griffiths. #GrangeHill’

‘Today we have heard tragic news that everyone’s favourite caretaker, Mr Griffiths played by George A Cooper sadly passed away on 13th November. RIP Mr Griffiths’, another penned.

A third wrote: ‘Oh no. Mr Griffiths in Grange Hill! Forgive me, Doctor Who, but he’ll always be remembered for that role with me and very good he was too. RIP.’
