A Greens pre-selection candidate who previously campaigned to change the law to allow bestiality now claims he was just joking.

Tom Raue, who was pre-selected by the Greens for the inner Sydney seat of Summer Hill last week, wrote an article for a student newspaper in 2012 making the argument the law should be changed.

‘Why is consensual sex with animals considered so heinous it must be illegal?’ he wrote, according to the Daily Telegraph.

‘Yes most Australians find it disgusting, but that’s not a good enough reason to legislate against it.’

Mr Raue this week told the paper he was just trying to be funny when he wrote the article.

‘It was making fun of ultra-conservatives like Corey Bernardi who said that equal marriage is a slippery slope towards bestiality,’ he said.

Summer Hill went to Labor in the last election in 2015, however, the Greens won 39.5 per cent of the two-party preferred vote.
