Gregg Berhalter ‘is in talks with Mexico’s Club America about their coaching vacancy’ as he waits to see if he will be asked to return to USMNT

USA World Cup head coach Gregg Berhalter has been heavily linked to taking over the vacant Club America head coaching job in Liga MX, according to ESPN and TUDN.

Various other reports have stated that Berhalter is set to take the Club America job ahead of the club’s friendly on Friday, while others have stated that he has been removed from the running as he holds out hope of returning to the USMNT.

Berhalter has also talked to Sparta Rotterdam to about being named manager, as well as English tier 2 team Swansea, according to various reports. 

US international and Club America forward Alejandro Zendejas commented on the rumor while taking part in training camp ahead of USA’s Nations League match against Mexico and said he would ‘love’ if the move were to happen.

‘Yesterday was the first day I heard the news. I have not been in contact with him or with anyone there, but welcome, I would love to, I have not had to be a player of him, but I have heard good things and as I said, welcome, ‘said Zendejas.

Zendejas received his first cap with the national team after the expiration of Berhalter’s contract with the US expired. 

BJ Callaghan has been named interim head coach following departure of former interim head coach Anthony Hudson who left the position to become manager of Qatari team Al-Markhiya. 

Former Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira has also been said to be interested in taking the USMNT job. 

Vieira and the US Soccer Federation are also said to have had contact with each other over the coaching position, although talks have not progressed further than the initial approach.

The USMNT is said to have spoken with more than 10 candidates and are hoping to hire a full-time coach before October friendlies against Germany and Ghana.
