Grieving mother-of-three whose son choked to death on a bouncy ball opens up about giving birth

Four months ago mother-of-three Anna Davis was forced to live every parent’s worst nightmare.

She watched from just three feet away as her toddler Alby choked to death on a bouncy ball gifted to him as an early fourth birthday present.

Anna attempted to pull out the ball – which was only slightly larger than a 50 cent piece – and performed CPR for 16 minutes during an ‘excruciating’ wait for paramedics.

The Tasmanian owner of toy shop The Small Folk was pregnant with Alby’s brother or sister at the time of the heartbreaking ordeal, and is preparing to give birth in a matter of days.

Reflecting on the waves of grief that have ebbed and flowed in their charming family’s life for the last few months, Anna took to Instagram to talk about her baby-to-be.

‘While paramedics fought to bring our precious Alby back from the heavens, I knelt by his side, with his hand clutched in my own, as our unborn babe kicked inside my womb,’ she wrote.

‘And in that moment the overwhelming contrast of life and death reared its ugly beauty in a way I never conceived possible.

‘The last few days have been spent swimming through a tidal wave of grief, grappling with the almost incomprehensible thoughts of one sweet life slipping through our fingers only four months ago, while physically and mentally preparing to guide our next little starling into the universe.

‘Sometimes this grief is raw and unbridled and takes us all by surprise. And all that we can do is surrender, allow our tears to cleanse the fire, and then set it free.’

At the time of Alby’s death in March the devastated mother took to social media to clarify some of the heartbreaking details and explain how ‘incorrect assumptions’ about the tragedy were hurting the grieving family further.

‘The heartache we are already experiencing is indescribable,’ she wrote.

‘To very briefly clarify some of the most widely spread misconceptions – yes, I tried to save our beautiful boy (including, but not only, undertaking CPR for 16 excruciating minutes until paramedics arrived).

‘I was three feet away from Alby when the incident occurred and was by his side within seconds.’
