Thousands of people are dying needlessly from heart attacks and strokes every year because of failures to treat high blood pressure, experts have warned.
The British Heart Foundation says an estimated 115,000 cases over the next decade could be prevented in England if diagnosis and treatment improved, warning that we lag behind other countries in tackling conditions that lead to heart attacks and stroke.
Increased obesity has increased the cases of type 2 diabetes while millions more people live with undiagnosed high blood pressure and raised cholesterol.

This could result in a resurgence of heart attacks and strokes, reversing the gains of recent years, it said.
An estimated 13.7million adults in England have high blood pressure, 5.7million of them undiagnosed.
The charity called for better NHS access to cutting edge treatments, a refreshed approach to rehabilitation services and full exploitation of technology and data science.
Simon Gillespie, chief executive of the British Heart Foundation, said: ‘Unless we change our approach, thousands of lives could be lost.’
